Data Point: In 2022, 67.3% of Indian children aged 6-14 were enrolled in government schools (ASER 2022)

Headline A: "Government School Enrollment Surges - 2 out of 3 Children Choose Public Education"

Headline B: "1 in 3 Indian Children Still Lack Access to Quality Government Education"

Same statistic, different stories. What's really happening?

  • Government school enrollment has increased from 65.6% in 2018
  • But learning outcomes remain stagnant in many states
  • Private school enrollment decreased, partly due to COVID economic impact
  • 32.7% in private schools doesn't mean they lack access to government schools

The 5-Step Chart Reading Process

Step 1: Read the Title and Labels - What is this chart trying to show?

Step 2: Understand the Axes - What do X and Y represent? What are the units?

Step 3: Check the Scale - Does the scale start at zero? Are intervals even?

Step 4: Identify Patterns - What trends, comparisons, or relationships do you see?

Step 5: Question the Story - What might this chart be hiding or emphasizing?

  • Misleading Averages: Using mean when median would be more representative
  • Missing Context: Numbers without comparison points or benchmarks
  • Correlation Confusion: Implying causation from correlation
  • Sample Size Games: Small samples presented as representative

Scenario 1: A news report claims "Massive 300% Increase in Solar Power Generation!"
